Autism, Aspergers, Children - Music, Art and Dance Therapy help tremendously

I do not believe in ABA Therapies; I have witnessed the harm, hurt and despair it causes families and children. There are much better choices available.

It has been my experience that only a very limited number of children diagnosed with autism and aspergers show any change or benefit from on of the main 'therapies'. To my knowledge, there is no accountability for their claims and treatments and insurance companies do not send out neutral third parties to exam their work.

I like the disclousure and information this article offers. The keys words are parents who are desperate to cure their children.

Please read this article and watch the videos reveal;

To quote Rationale Wikepedia;

"

The bad side

Some organisations use ABA therapy as a form of torture to the subjects. *Cough* Aversive therapy.[7] *Cough* Judge Rotenberg Educational Center using electric shock therapy.[8] Some people do seem to seriously believe it is the cure to autism.[9] This ABA cure thing is absolute pseudoscience. Aversion therapy considered unethical to use on autistic children.[10] However some parents seem to take too far with 40+ hours therapy per week and forcing their children on the spectrum to act completely normal — which many autism acceptance activists argue as cruel. They[11] claim that things like harmless stims are in fact beneficial to the child as it provides comfort. However Canadian based activist Michelle Dawson has worked hard to have ABA banned as an autism treatment and has written in detail about its pitfalls[12].
Introducing some messed up history: Ivar Lovaas, a proponent of ABA, used such techniques for the Feminine Boy Project - an early attempt at reparative therapy for homosexuality - at UCLA in 1974.[13]. The experiment was met with major criticism from within its a few years later. [14] [15] Psychiatry has some dark roots."

I am far more impressed with using Music, Art and Dance Therapies when working with children on the spectrum. I have witnessed first hand success with numerous children over the past 40 year in my Music practice.

Rather than force, bribe of manipulate behaviors which may never change, why not offer straight forward choices to all children in Music / Art / Dance Therapies. Give children new alternatives and creative ways to communicate their thoughts, feelings and emotions.

The sad news here in America, ever since legislation was passed that required insurance companies to provide ABA services, millions of dollars are spent on this sad, limited process called ABA therapy, and there is NO ACCOUNTABILITY to my knowledge, where a third party checks to see if the stat resports are true and that this form of therapy really works. To quote an attorney friend of mine, it is cheaper for an insurance provider to offer services that in reality do not work, are not authentic than to pay out settlements which would cost more in the long run for witholding care. The licensed therapists I have spoken with here in California, do not support this form of treatment.

As I approach my doctoral studies, I will be doing massive research to further validate the fact that Music / Art and Dance therapy are far more effective and other sports with help children on the spectrum to communicate their inner most feelings, thoughts and emotions.

I am happy to interact with all parents who are frustrated with this issue and wish to explore other creative ways to engage with their precious children.

All the best,

Art Scott
